Corporate Hell a Little Less Hellish
11:40 a.m. - 2006-08-08

Yea! Our company just allowed us to form a sanctioned LGBT affinity group. It will be a good way to make connections. And speaking of things being less hellish, the weather has cooled off so that I turned the A/C off for the first time in a month or more. I know it won't last, but it's a nice momentary reprieve.

Normalcy Returning?
1:59 p.m. - 2006-08-07

Finally hell week is over. And my sinuses are starting to behave themselves. I was so exhausted last week that I would just go home and crash in front of the TV.

I did catch some pretty decent shows. I saw "House" for the first time and thought it was great. "Bones" is also a pretty good show as are "Dead Like Me" and "Eureka". And I finally caught "The 4400" which I think is pretty interesting. Some other stuff I watched was "Kyle XY", "Fallen", and "The Dead Zone". My favorite show is "Psych" - very funny and with a hottie star.

Tim and I went out Friday night. We were going to catch a concert on the riverfront, but when we saw tickets were $25 we decided to change our plans. We went to a quaint restaurant we're fond of and for $15 had a meal, a beer and a live Irish ensemble.

Vince and his sister joined us later and we had a nice visit.

Saturday I just laid low and tried to recouperate. The most energy I expended was doing laundry and putting away some of Andy's things.

Sunday, Vince and I went out for brunch. Eugene and I talked in the afternoon. He really wants me to come up where he lives next weekend and I'm really excited about it.

He asked his roommate if I could stay at their house but Orin said no. But I'm looking forward to seeing where Eugene lives, where he works and the bar he was thrown out of a couple years ago when he broke his wrists. ** rolls eyes **

Last night I helped Andy change one of his tires. Unfortunately is was damage to the sidewall so that means a new tire. We went out for Mexican and had a nice meal.

Nancy calls me and Andy had another flat last night - very similar, hopefully the same event. He doesn't remember running over anything. It looked a lot like a slashing except that it was on the inside of the tire. Very odd.

Hot Wednesday

Day 2 of 4 ten hour days. My sinuses are acting up. They had been causing my teeth to hurt - extremely! Today is a bit better.

Last weekend was moving Andy from Des Moines - in 99 degree weather.

We did have time to have dinner out and saw Cars. Very good movie.

Well, back to work.

Meeting Eugene in Mad City
10:22 a.m. - 2006-07-27

My weekend in Madison with Eugene was fun. Friday, after driving thru rain for two hours, the weather finally cleared off and we met up at our motel. For the evening we went out for Mexican (food !!) and Eugene found a great park on the lake where we could watch the sunset, see the lit up capital building and watch the boats, ducks and beavers (flat tailed versions) pass by.

Saturday after breakfast we walked around the farmers market which has a festival atmosphere. We were intrigued by some bell peppers that were pale yellow and some that were purple & white.

This woman gets an award for veggie stacking.

We spent the afternoon hanging out at parks and playing frizbee. We planned to have a cook out so about 5:00 we left our great corner of the park with shade and tables and a view of one of the many lakes to go to the grocery store.

By the time we returned, a family reunion had moved into our spot. By the time we found another place, storm clouds were moving in. Oh, they'll pass us by. So I lit the gas grill.

We a few minutes later we were sitting in my car soaked and watching torrential rains and hail fall from the sky. When the rain let up, the grill had cooled so we returned to the hotel and grilled in the yard by the parking lot.

Later we watched some TV, went swimming and played pool at one of the gay bars.

Sunday we had breakfast and hung out in our makeshift "living room" at the park until I had to head for home.

Gimme a 'D'!

One radio announcer said that many Arabs believe that Hezbolah is the last defense against Israeli aggression. Defensive? I guess it all depends on your perspective. I'm sure the Soviets thought putting missles in Cuba was defensive as well as is our war on Iraq.

Pure Nerd
12:41 p.m. - 2006-07-25

With the description below, I'm proud to be a nerd.

Pure Nerd
78 % Nerd, 26% Geek, 26% Dork
For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in Nerd, earning you the title of: Pure Nerd.

The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up all of the traits and tendences associated with the "dork." No-longer. Being smart isn't as socially crippling as it once was, and even more so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be replaced with the following label: Purely Successful.

Odds and Ends
10:51 a.m. - 2006-07-21

IT's Friday and the hear wave is breaking. I'm bugging out out work early this afternoon and heading to Madison to spend the weekend with Eugene. It's supposed to be in the 70's there. I've leaded up the cooler, a portable gas grill, lawn chairs and frizbees for when we emerge into the daylight.

There's a big hole in the road in front of my house (actually two houses down) and the right lane of the 4-lane street is blocked up to my driveway. I like it. Makes backing out a breeze.

I was walking down the street on a coffee run this morning and 7 WW2 era fighter planes in formation were circling the downtown area. There's an air show in town, so it was cool to get an impromptu show.

Tim and I went to see the Lake House on Wednesday. That movie will screw with your brain. The main characters are living 2 years apart and it's easy to forget what year each character is in. But it was a pretty cool movie.

Tim drove out two girls who came in during the movie and started talking. What is it with people. The same thing happened to me when I saw the Da Vinci Code. A young couple came in late and sat behind me and started talking.

I decided to move and they watched me with a look of terror as if I was going to wring their necks or something. They soon ended up leaving as well.

Work is kind of a zoo. I'm on 3 projects in addition to my normal work. I walk into a meeting and I have this moment when I try to remember which hproject this one is about and what we're suposed to be doing.

And I now have 3 desks. I have my nice large cube in the HQ building from my old job that is officially me current job. I have the temporary tiny desk in the former help desk bullpen on the top floor of a building a block away.

And now I have a new desk in a new building a block away in a different direction. This new one is the nicest on the 12th floor with new furniture and lots of space. And my very own window. Now I may not get to keep it as I am not actually sitting there. But I at least have staked a claim.

Because unfortunately until October or so, I have to work in the building with the tiny desk because that's where my team is.

I've been in jobs before where I had two desks - the farthest was when I had one in England for a year - but this is the first time I've had three.

Then there was a nasty incident with Cal and I regarding a hairball. Lesson learned - 1) hairball food is not really effective 2) never try to herd a retching cat into the bathroom.

It's Monday, It's Hot and I'll Whine if I Want To
10:37 a.m. - 2006-07-17

Jeez it's hot. 96 today. But at least there's a breeze. Plus the humidity is very high. The heat index is like 104 because of it. You get cabin fever when it's like this. You just wanna get outseide but it's too unpleasant. Looks like we'll get a break by the weekend, but for now it's week three of 90 degree weather.

I felt extremely lethargic over the weekend. I woke up Sunday and after coffee wanted to take a nap. I forced myself to go to the mall to get a walk in. Maybe I was just suffering a low grade sinus condition.

We need a nice wind to blow this all back to Atlanta where it belongs - sorry Matt :-)

I dislike when managers act like bully's. Our corporate policy is to use the term customer when referring to internal customers. One manager sent me an email chastising me for using the term customer internally.

Now she knows exactly where to go to make this policy change, but instead of addressing it properly, she comes down on my team for following correct procedure. So now we are stuck between the way the corporation has told us to do things and this high level manager.

To me that's bullying - using your power over lower level staff to circumvent accepted policy.

I called the Indiana sheriff's dept. to get a copy of the police report for my slashed tire. They said it would cost me $3.00. Now while this is a nominal fee, I feel like I'm having to pay for the police to do there job. I could see if I were asking for a 2nd copy, but I was never given a copy. If the officer had handed me a copy on site would I have had to pay the $3.00?
